92. L'ultimo quadro , rinvenuto nelle stesse circostanze in frammenti, è quello tradizionalmente (O. Jahn bibl.) identificato come te di Sofonisba" (MN~ ' 8968), appartenente ad un parete di III stile con edicola centrale a fondo rosso scuro anta verde con specchiature colonna con collarini e fiori di loto e pannello laterale a fondo giallo. La scena si svolge in una sala colonnata, con tendaggi che in parte nascondono la statua di bronzo di dioniso barbato, con kàntharos e tirso, e quella d'argento di Apollo, con ramo d'olivo e arco, che conferiscono all'ambiente un tono di ricercata luxuria. Sul letto è stesa una coppia dì banchettanti, entrambi coronati di fiori, e la donna solleva la coppa d'argento. Ai piedi del letto due giovani inservienti, una delle quali, dal colorito bruno e dai lineamenti delicati, con il capo avvolto da un turbante; in primo piano due figure maschili: quella di sinistra, coperta solo da un perizoma è un servo che porta un cesto di frutta su di un vassoio; quello di destra con tunica, mantello e alti calzari, è stato identificato in Scipione, alla presenza del quale la figlia di Asdrubale, assistita dal marito Massinissa, si accingerebbe a bere il veleno che impedirà al vincitore di condurla via quale preda di guerra. L'unica altra replica di questo soggetto, solitamente definito "a carattere storico", è stata trovata nella Casa del Fabbro (I 10, 7: cfr. voi. II, p. 403, fig. 5), e la Elia (cit. in bibl,), che lo riprese in esame, propose di vedervi piuttosto la morte di Cleopatra per l'età matura della donna, per la presenza dei fichi nel cesto, e per la comprensibilità della vicenda nella prima età imperiale, alla quale vanno attribuite entrambe le copie. Brendel (cit. in bibl.) invece, vi vede semplicemente una scena di banchetto. Va notato che il frammento con il servo con il vassoio, nella relazione del 22 luglio 1769, viene descritto separatamente dal resto del quadro cui venne poi correttamente ricongiunto. Diap. AFSN 2512

92. The last painting, found in the same circumstances in fragments, is the one traditionally (O. Jahn bibl.) identified as Sofonisba te" (MN~ ' 8968), belonging to a III style wall with a central aedicule with a dark red background. green with mirrors column with collars and lotus flowers and side panel with yellow background.The scene takes place in a colonnaded hall, with curtains that partly hide the bronze statue of dionysus the bearded man, with kantharos and thyrsus, and the silver one of Apollo, with olive branch and bow, which give the room a tone of refined luxury. A couple of banqueters are lying on the bed, both crowned with flowers, and the woman raises the silver cup. At the foot of the bed two young attendants, one of whom, with a brown complexion and delicate features, with her head wrapped up in a turban; in the foreground, two male figures: the one on the left, covered only by a loincloth, is a servant carrying a basket of fruit on of a tray; that or right with tunic, cloak and high shoes, has been identified as Scipio, in whose presence Hasdrubal's daughter, assisted by her husband Massinissa, is about to drink the poison that will prevent the victor from taking her away as war booty. The only other replica of this subject, usually defined as "historical in nature", was found in the Casa del Fabbro (I 10, 7: cfr. vol. II, p. 403, fig. 5), and the Elia (cit in bibl,), who re-examined it, proposed to see in it rather the death of Cleopatra due to the mature age of the woman, due to the presence of the figs in the basket, and due to the comprehensibility of the story in the early imperial age, to which they go attribute both copies. Brendel (cited in the Bibl.) on the other hand, simply sees a banquet scene. It should be noted that the fragment with the servant with the tray, in the report dated 22 July 1769, is described separately from the rest of the painting to which it was then correctly rejoined. slide AFSN 2512
